Plantain leaf is thought, by most, to be a weed, but it is actually an incredibly useful herb. Legend claims that Alexander the Great first discovered Plantain and brought it back to Europe. Native Americans referred to Plantain as “Whitman’s Foot,” because it seemed to spring up wherever they would travel. Plantain leaves are high in Vitamin A and C, and in calcium. Plantain leaves also contain constituents with antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antitoxic properties. This makes Plantain leaves effective for treating insect or animal bites, as well as pain relief for burns and itching.
